They watched from above the vanity, one to each wall, as the girls grew from hair ribbons to eyeliner. They kept their silence through slammed doors, sleepovers, secret diaries, and record players turned up too loud. They saw every borrowed blouse, every whispered confession, every time one sister pretended not to cry so the other could pretend not to notice.
Sometimes, late at night, when both girls had fallen asleep under quilts and dreams, the women in the frames would glance—just briefly—at each other. And smile, as if to say: They turned out just fine.
